JTP's 1968 Sportomatic Saga

Submitted by JP911 on Mon, 01/26/2009 - 15:37

I owned a 1967 912. I took it in for scheduled service and the dealership owner let me take a 911 Sporto for a loaner car. (He was a good friend of mine) The next day I went back to the dealership and told him I would be keeping the 911 and he could keep the 912. We signed some paperwork and I became the owner of a 1968 911 Sportomatic with about 900 miles on the odometer. The previous owner had brought it back due to an unfortunate disagreement with his sponsor, Lola. He was racing Lolas for Chevy and they took exception to him being seen in a Porsche, one of their competitors.

I lived in Chicago at the time and the salt they use on the roads soon began taking its toll on the car. After 10 years I, and my 911, moved to Colorado. No salt. Many years later I took a position working in Greenland. One of my relatives who had built a couple of show cars convinced me to sell it to him since I would be out of country for a while.

Again, many years later, I learned that due to unforeseen circumstances beyond his control the car had been sitting outside, uncovered, in the hot sun in the corrosive atmosphere of the Texas gulf coast. I told him I wanted it back and he said if I paid for shipping he would give it to me.

So, here I am with a major rust bucket which I am slowly bringing back to life. I've managed to acquire most of the needed new sheet metal and have begun the dis-assembly and rust recovery to get it ready for the welding. I'm hoping the project doesn't last longer than I do.

Pictures (some definitely R rated to a Porsche owner) will follow.
