John Thompson's 1968 911 SWT Sportomatic

Submitted by JT912 on Mon, 01/19/2009 - 03:59

We came across this car in 2002 via my brother-in-law who is a school teacher in Portland, OR. This car was listed on the schools classified website. It was in storage, outside, with a tattered blue tarp covering her. The night we looked at it, there was atleast an inch of standing water in the floors of the cockpit. While I was hoping to get her for a song, we ended up agreeing on $3000. We were just beginning construction of our personal house, so this car sat in storage another 2-1/2 years before we got started tearing her apart. This car was my motivation to get the house finished.

Driving our new find home ...

Submitted by kpatrickwheeler on Thu, 01/15/2009 - 12:36

We exchanged emails with the owner through the week and met again as soon as the check cleared in the same parking lot of Home Depot in Foster City California. Weyman and Karen took it out driving so that Karen could get used to the car. After a turn or two around Foster City and a few more pieces of paperwork it was time to take the car home to its new home north of San Francisco. Karen drove it up Highway 101 into some nasty San Francisco traffic and north out of the City.

Buying our Sporto

Submitted by kpatrickwheeler on Thu, 01/15/2009 - 12:27

Patrick was looking through Traderonline’s classic car section and noticed a few older Porsches seemed to be going for some pretty good prices. We talked about it and Karen decided that she would be OK with this. Kept watching the ad’s and called on a few. We arranged to see two cars one Saturday, one up in Santa Rosa, an older Targa, owned by a young kid living at home, paint was supposed to be ‘faded’, he did not know how many miles it had on it, his dad was a mechanic and had ‘fixed it up’ for him. The other was down in Foster City and I had only exchanged emails with the seller.

Our Intro To Sportomatics

Submitted by kpatrickwheeler on Thu, 01/15/2009 - 12:22

We purchased the car in late 1999 from the original owner in Foster City in the SF Bay Area. Since that time the only real change we have made was to install a set of Weber Carburetors. As the old carbs needed rebuilding, the significant performance boost may have only been partially due to the Webers. Things done to the car are:
* Webers w/ fuel bars (whee-e-e-e-e !!!)
* Lower front end back down to factory defaults
* Replace leaking oil return sleeves
* Carrera chain tensioners (just because)
* New tires and batteries (Pilot GT 'junior' racers on S fuchs, lovely!)

Aubergine '72 911E Coupe

Submitted by PhilGarner on Thu, 01/15/2009 - 08:45

Year: 1972
Colour: Aubergine
Model: 911E
Chassis: 9112200129

PGC 695K was originally a French car, bought in Paris by a Dr. Frank Calachi, who in 1980 moved to London and registered the car in the UK, where it was given a suitable age-related plate.

I have owned the car since 2000, the previous owner kept it in a barn on a farm and didn't really seem to know how to fix its problems. The brakes suffered from binding, it backfired badly when warm and didn't give full throttle due to a poorly adjusted linkage. Most of that has been fixed but the MFI is still far from perfect.
